Shelter

Q&A

Q1: I just arrived from Syria and I need a place to stay, who can help me?
Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Lebanese Returnees

Current capacity is very limited, and only few families found to be most in need will receive “a place to stay” from organisations (see Annex in Shelter section for shelter organisations’ hotlines); more families will instead receive some other type of support once they have found a place to stay on their own.

Q2: Will I have to pay for the shelter?
Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Lebanese Returnees, All Registered Refugees and asylum seekers

Services from major international humanitarian organisations are free of charge. You should make sure you understand the terms of any shelter you may receive, and contact the humanitarian organisation if you think there is a problem.

Q3: Do I have to register with UNHCR?
Applies to: Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Host Communities, Lebanese Returnees

Registering with UNHCR is recommended but is not compulsory. It is a choice for each person. Some humanitarian support is only available to registered people; some support is available without registration.

Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Lebanese Returnees

There are different kinds of support from different organisations (see Annex in Sheltersection for shelter organisations’ hotlines). They may provide you temporary shelter or room in a building or they may relocate you to a collective shelter or assist you with different kind of shelter supplies.

Q5: Will I automatically receive the assistance upon arrival?
Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Lebanese Returnees, All Registered Refugees and asylum seekers

Not necessarily, and probably not very quickly. It depends on organisations’ conditions and procedures and the rapidity of response/assistance also depends on the capacity of the shelter partner. In general those found to be most in need are the most urgent to be assisted. If you have just arrived to Lebanon you should contact the nearest organisation for specific support: different organisations for registration, hygienic supplies, and shelter.

All humanitarian organisations provide their services free of charge. Do not give money in return of services provided by humanitarian organisations to anyone.

Q8: How long can I stay at this shelter?
Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Lebanese Returnees

It depends on the project conditions. Your stay at the particular shelter depends on many different factors like shelter type, your family situation, organisation capacity and agreement with your landlord.

Q9: Is anyone going to share the shelter with me?
Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Host Communities, Lebanese Returnees
add_circle_outline remove_circle_outline

Possibly, it depends on your family size and composition, and on the shelter available. Humanitarian organisations try to give a family a space to themselves whenever possible, taking into consideration your family privacy and safety. Most likely you will be asked to share toilets and bathrooms, and kitchens.

Q10: If there is more than one family sharing living space (be it a tent, unfinished house or garage) how are the supplies distributed and shared?
Applies to: Registered Syrian Refugees, Non Registered Syrians, Palestine Refugees from Syria, Host Communities, Lebanese Returnees
add_circle_outline remove_circle_outline

It depends for the shelter condition; if the supplies are not enough for the shelter we can make a proper agreement with the head of the families.
